Westport teachers ink three-year deal with town
School committee chairman Evan Gendreau said he was happy to have a trouble-free negotiation. Talks started around the beginning of the school year, “and ultimately there was a lot of good communication involved, and a lot of collaboration.”
Budgetary shortfalls are among the root cause of many of the district’s issues, he said, and he said he’s proud that while the budget supports “our great teachers,” it also does so in a fiscally responsible way.
Westport school brass on the move this summer
Though he admitted it’s not ideal and was forced by budget constraints, there are bright sides, Aubin and school committee chairman Evan Gendreau said.
Gendreau said that faced with the district’s financial realities, leaving the old school made sense, instead of finding other places to cut $90,000 from the budget.
“Our goal going into cuts is always to minimize the impact on student learning,” Gendreau said, noting that having administrators close to students is a benefit — “we’re running pretty thin with administrators because we can’t afford it.”

Evan Gendreau, a public policy consultant who has lived in Westport for 15 years, is running unopposed for one open school committee seat. If elected, it would be his first term as an elected official here. He currently serves as Chariman of the Westport Republican Town Committee, and previously ran for state representative in the 8th Bristol district.
